Retail EDW (Enterprise Data warehouse) Solution
Retail EDW (Enterprise Data warehouse) Solution
OVERVIEW
- Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Seattle (Washington, USA), Car Toys, Inc. is the largest independent multi-channel specialty car audio and mobile electronics retailer in America. It is distributed across 48 locations in Washington, Oregon, Colorado, and Texas. Wireless Advocates is one of its subsidiaries which was spun off as a separate company.
- As part of the EBS initiative, the scope of this project included building an Enterprise Data warehouse (EDW) and data marts solution that will retrieve data from various sources such as AX, GERS, AAP etc., consolidate, and periodically update data that is needed to support all the Data Analysis and Reporting needs. All the reports will be build using SSRS/Power BI for data visualization.
- Below were the problems identified with today’s reporting (AS-IS solution):
- Reports are created in “silos” – designed based on individual project needs with no single source of truth.
- Not optimized for performance.
- Not optimized for our SQL licensing.
- Hard to maintain due to Multiple SQL versions.
- No clear ownership – combination of IT and Non-IT.
- Frequent production issues.
- Lack of monitoring through regular processes due to the complexity .
- Lack of access controls.
SOLUTION PROVIDED BY PEOPLE TECH GROUP
- Migrated existing reports to SSRS/Power BI retrieving data from warehouse (EDW).
- The new BI solution includes the below features:
- The new data warehouse was hosted on the SQL server 2016 server, and replacing various existing sources such as Pivot link, Osprey, DREYK.
- Data marts was created for separate purpose/department to define the clear ownership and access control.
- Centralized data movement and monitoring process.
BENEFITS
- The new BI solution provides a single source of truth for all the reporting and data analysis. All the new reporting requirements utilize the same EDW framework for their reporting needs. The solution enabled an automated, centralized data movement and monitoring process.
